Set amidst a breathtaking landscape of mountains, lakes and forests, Elena is the epitome of a rural Bulgarian town. Elena boasts a wide range of traditional architecture, and many houses here are built in the age-old wooden style, roofed with hand-shaped clay tiles.

Despite its peaceful atmosphere, you’ll still be able to find a good selection of amenities on offer around the town of Elena. There are a number of small supermarkets on for your basic provisions, as well as a reasonable scattering of bars, a nightclub, and a number of good restaurants - ranging from hearty, traditional Bulgarian cuisine, to a great little pizzeria.

The town also boasts a number of cultural attractions. Bulgaria is enjoying something of a revival at the moment, with an increased focus on the traditions of folk music, dance and architecture. As a result, many of the older buildings around Elena have recently been restored to their former glory - including the folk museum, a fascinating exhibit set in one of the town’s most striking wooden buildings. There are also a number of beautiful churches you’ll be able to visit here, all decorated in the classic eastern orthodox style, with gold leaf and ornate religious icons.

If you’re looking for exciting pastimes in the area, then you’ll find plenty of outdoor pursuits on offer in the countryside surrounding Elena. The nearby lakes make a great spot for anyone fond of fishing, and there are also places in the area where you’ll be able to hire out a boat for the day. Horse riding is another option, or you’ll find some great trails for mountain biking in the surrounding hills - you’ll even find a couple of quad biking courses within reach, as well as a ski lodge that operates during the winter months. Of course, anyone who enjoys walking will be in their element here in Elena.

You’re not just limited to those attractions on offer in Elena itself however, as there are some great places to visit around the region. Not far from here you’ll find the town of Veliko Tarnovo - the former capital of Bulgaria, this historic town features a fascinating old quarter as well as a magnificent castle and a range of museums. There is a truly breathtaking monastery to visit at the mountain town of Triavno, while to the south you could always take a trip to the city of Plovdiv - this is Bulgaria’s second-largest city, and famous for its importance as a national centre for arts, culture and traditions.
